Catching up-training July 10-13

Hey everyone,

It was a busy week/weekend in my little world, so I’m just now getting to post my training journals from the past few days.

Last Thursday I took a rest day-mostly because I had absolutely no time to fit in a workout. But, that was OK because I did something every other day last week. Friday, I had to make up Thursday’s run, which was 4 miles. I did 4.5. Then, went to the gym to do Friday’s weight lifting routine. I felt pretty good throughout it all.

Saturday, i’d planned on just chilling out and relaxing a bit, but that didn’t happen. Instead, my husband and I went mountain biking. It started off totally frustrating. Instead of warming up on the jeep trail like we usually do, we went directly onto single track and I couldn’t get a rhythm going at all to start. However, after a few minutes I did get into it, and we had a decent hour and a half ride, mostly on single track, and mostly uphill.

I thought that riding would negatively affect the 10K race I was doing on Sunday, but it actually turned out ok. I was aiming for a 10 minute mile, but the uphill on the race was killer! About 3.5-4 miles uphill and about 2 miles downhill. I wound up with about an 11 minute mile, which I was happy with. Starting off I was trying to keep pace with a few women who were in front of me, but they took off about 10 minutes into it. Rather than get discouraged, though, I just kept my own pace up the hills, refusing to walk, and I wound up catching those women walking up the hills! I was proud of myself for being able to maintain a pace that allowed me to run the entire thing and adapt to the ups and downs much more easily than if I was walking/running the whole thing.

At the end I gave it my last burst of energy and crossed the finish line to see my husband standing there with a huge smile on his face. He was so proud of me, and it made me so happy! I felt so good having accomplished my first running race.

I think instead of doing the half-marathon I was originally planning on running at the end of this month, I’m instead going to do the Cascade Run Off with my friend, Kelly. It’s a 15K and it’s in downtown Portland, and is followed by beer and music-so you can’t beat that.

Today I’m back to the gym to just lift weights.
